Behavioural interview questions to ask candidates to find out if they can really do the job

While behavioural interview questions are not always the best to ask a candidate, there are some that can provide a real insight into the candidate.

If you ask the right questions, you can find out a lot more than where they see themselves in five years’ time. Instead, you will be able to make a decision based on their reactions to situations and how they say they have resolved issues in the past.

Here are some ideas for behavioural interview questions next time you’re interviewing:

Describe a time you had to work under time pressure to get something done. How did you do it?

As their possible future employer, you want to know they can work under pressure and cope well with it.

What is your greatest achievement in past jobs? Why?

While it might feel unnatural for a candidate to praise themselves, It is good to know they can be self-aware and commend themselves when credit is due. Their answer might also be surprising to you.

Give an example of a time you had to meet a goal, but you didn’t manage it. Why, and how did you feel?

Employees need to deal with disappointment sometimes, it’s good to know they can take it and learn from it.

Describe a time you had to change the way you worked to get something done. What did you do?

You want to know they can adapt to situations and overcome hurdles. It is always a positive trait in employees when they are happy to adapt and learn changes to work more efficiently.

Give an example of a time processes were changed in a previous job. How did you handle it?

Change can be tough, but you need to know they can adapt and not get stuck in their ways. Change enables businesses to move forward and create new processes when the old ones aren’t working.

Behavioural interview questions can really show you how a candidate thinks on their feet, how they have worked in the past and how they can learn and adapt from situations. They are not always necessary or the best to rely on, but they can be if you ask the right questions.
