The best interview techniques to impress candidates

Preparing your interview techniques is a great way to make sure you are prepared to impress candidates who walk through your door.

Interviews are as much about you making a good impression as it is about them doing the same. After all, you need to fill that vacancy and you need to get the best person you can into the role.

Use these techniques to help them get a feel for your company:

Be on time

If your candidate has to wait for you to show up, they will feel like they are bottom of your list of priorities. The same would work if they were late for you. Be prompt, so they see you are keen to meet them and that you are a professional company.

Offer them a drink

It might seem very basic, but it can really help them to relax. If you offer them a cup of tea, it makes them feel like they are settling in for a good chat, and that you won’t be booting them out after five minutes.

Introductions

Instead of starting off by asking them to tell you a little more about themselves, tell them about you. By giving your own introduction it will make them feel like they are in the driver’s seat and will encourage them to open up a little bit more.

Visual aids

Literally show them what your company has to offer. Not with graphs and charts, but with visuals of what would be expected of them in the role. If you’re hiring a barista, give them one of the coffees they would be expected to make. If you’re hiring for a salesperson, show them what they will be selling and let them really get a feel of where they are going. You could also show them examples of the company culture: photos of events, or reviews.

Be prepared

Know exactly what questions you want to ask and stay on track. Then know what answers you would expect to receive from the candidate.

Show them around

Candidates thrown straight into a meeting room and then directed out have no idea what your company is like. It is a good idea to show them around and let them see where they will be working so they can form a real opinion.

As an interviewer, think of yourself as a salesperson. You need to sell the company to candidates, so you have the best selection of applicants to consider for your role.
