Focusing your resume on the job you want to get can yield better results than using the same generic resume for every opportunity.
While you might be tempted to apply to jobs of all kinds simply to find a job, this isn’t the most beneficial process.
Recruiters and employers will pick an industry focused resume, over one that is not aimed at the career you want. It shows you are interested and committed, rather than trying your luck.
Here are the ways you can focus your profile:
Rather than listing your experience as standard, go into relevant detail about how you have developed your skills and how they would help in the industry you are aiming for
Make sure your education is up to date with relevant qualifications. If you have taken any short courses or similar, include these. It not only shows your education but also your own initiative to take the courses.
Show how your interests or hobbies can go alongside your chosen industry. If you have written for the school newspaper, include it to show your writing and organisation skills.
Include references from relevant experience and also people that can tell a future employer how your skills are useful in that industry.
If the industry you are focusing on requires an RSA or similar qualification, make sure this is all in there.
As well as focusing your profile, make sure you focus your job search. This will save you from applying for jobs you’re not keen on, when you could be applying for your dream job. You will also be able to research and understand more about your selected industry by really focusing on it.
