New job seekers will know ‘first interview’ jitters all too well, we understand it can be difficult to figure out the right way to carry oneself in a job interview and how to best meet the expectations of your interviewer.
Try following these four easy interview tips for first-time applicants to help ease interview anxiety.
ARRIVE TO YOUR INTERVIEW EARLY
Make sure you get there 5 – 10 minutes before your scheduled interview time. This will provide time check in with the company’s receptionist and become comfortable with the office. Arrive any earlier and you risk annoying the hiring manager; any later and you risk running late. Never be late!
DRESS TO IMPRESS
Hiring managers take your interview appearance seriously. Candidates who dress to impress–that is conservatively and neatly–demonstrate to the hiring manager that they will be responsible in the role. On the other hand, if you’re dressed too casually or provocatively you risk looking unprofessional or as though you’re not taking it seriously.
HAVE QUESTIONS PREPARED FOR YOUR INTERVIEWER
While the majority of your interview will be focused on answering your interviewer’s questions, all job interviews end with the same question: “Do you have any questions for me?” One of the quickest ways to fail an interview is to have nothing prepared to ask in response. Asking questions of your potential employer demonstrates your interest in the company and allows you to reinforce your qualifications. Moreover, the opportunity to ask questions also allows you to evaluate if the company is the best fit for you.
Having a few questions ready to ask your interviewer is always a good idea. Examples of good questions to use include:
- What made the last person successful in this role?
- What skills are you looking for in a candidate?
- Who will I be working with in my role?
No matter what the interviewer’s response is to any of these questions, be certain to respond thoughtfully and further highlight your qualifications for the role.
SHAKE HANDS AT THE BEGINNING AND END OF THE INTERVIEW
Your handshake is one of the first indications that an interviewer receives about your personality. Shaking hands at the beginning and end of your interview can project confidence and create a connection with your interviewer. However, be careful: a bad handshake–for example, one that is clammy or awkward–can give your interviewer a negative first impression.
